Autoflowering cannabis seeds

Autoflowering cannabis seeds (or "auto" or automatic) are a category of seeds distinguished by a unique genetic trait: they do not need a change in the light cycle to trigger flowering.

Cannabis ruderalis

Most cannabis varieties (called "photoperiodic") begin flowering when the hours of light decrease. Indoors, this means the grower must reduce the light cycle from 18 hours to 12 hours.

Autoflowering seeds, on the other hand, come from a cross between a classic cannabis variety (Indica or Sativa) and Cannabis ruderalis. The latter is a wild species native to the cold regions of Eastern Europe and Russia, where the days can be very long in summer.

Cannabis ruderalis has developed the ability to flower automatically after a certain period to adapt to its harsh environment. By crossing this genetic line with more potent varieties, breeders have created plants that have inherited this characteristic while retaining their genetic traits.

Advantages of autoflowering seeds

  • Ease and speed: This is their main advantage. They are ideal for beginners, as the plant manages its own transition to flowering, generally after 2 to 4 weeks of growth. The total life cycle is very short, often between 8 and 10 weeks.
  • Discretion: Autoflowering plants are generally smaller and more compact than photoperiod plants. They are therefore perfect for discreet cultivation indoors or on a balcony.
  • Multiple harvests: Thanks to their rapid life cycle, it is possible to achieve several harvests during the same outdoor growing season.

Originally, and not so long ago, autoflowering varieties were often looked down upon. But modern genetics have greatly improved. Today, there are many autoflowering varieties that rival the most renowned photoperiod varieties in terms of potency, flavor, and yield.
